Reflections
Acrylic on canvas. 18 × 24 in.
My grandparents have always lived close by when we were growing up in Maryland. A few years ago, my grandparents moved to Florida and I have not been able to see them as much due to the distance.
This year, we visited them for Thanksgiving break. I had decided in advance that I was going to leave them with a painting. Not only as a gift, but as a reminder of our visit there together as a family.
The reflecting globe in their backyard was the same one they had in their Maryland home - a reminder of when we were closer together. When I saw it, I knew that was going to be my subject. While in the initial sketching phases, I know generally it can seem boring to choose such an obvious composition (centered main object), I knew the strength of the reflections on the globe would be enough to capture the focal point and prove itself to be worthy of the center placement.
